‘Suffer Little Children’: The Foundling Hospital at Chester – 13 February 2023

Dr Anthony Annakin-Smith  is a well-known researcher, writer and speaker on local history, particularly on the region’s 18th and 19th century social and industrial past.

This talk focuses on the little-known Chester branch of London’s Foundling Hospital. In the mid-1700s abandoned babies and infants were looked after in the Blue Coat School building and in the homes of carers in Chester and surrounding villages. Many went on to be apprenticed locally too. This is the moving story of the 300 or so children whose early years were spent in the care of this remarkable and progressive social institution.
