Dalesman Trip – Tuesday 19th June 2018

There are 37 of us confirmed on this trip and bookings are now closed. For these lucky members, full details are given below.

We have organised a group booking, at a discounted price for Society members, on The Dalesman train from Chester to Carlisle and return (with steam from Hellifield on the Settle – Carlisle line). The train leaves Chester Station at 0748 and will return at 2235.

There is a buffet car for drinks and sandwiches throughout the day but we have made arrangements for a three course lunch for our party on arrival in Carlisle. From the comfort of your seat in some of the oldest working carriages in operation today, your adventure begins! Some of these carriages date back to the 1920s and served throughout the golden age of rail, and some featured in the Harry Potter movies, and have all been lovingly restored. These traditional carriages will be hauled by diesel for the first part of the journey, then from Hellifield the steam engine pulls the train across the Settle to Carlisle, England’s most scenic railway. The train stops in historic border city of Carlisle in Cumbria for a break of around 2 hours and we shall have a three course lunch in the Hallmark Hotel next to the station.

The Settle to Carlisle Line first opened to passengers in 1876 and takes in 20 viaducts, 14 tunnels and countless beautiful vistas along its 72 mile track. This historic line travels across the stunning Pennine hills, showcasing the English countryside at its best. We are still looking for a volunteer to write reviews of the lectures for publication on this website. These are intended to provide members who were unable to attend with a brief insight into the subject and are most certainly not ‘critiques’ of the speaker.
