Christmas Traditions in Britain and Around the World – 19 December 2022

David Hearn is a Liverpool historian who has spoken to us before.

n describing tonight’s seasonal talk David says, ”In Britain Christmas trees with baubles and greetings cards with robins may be familiar to us all now but that has not always been the case. When did Britain’s “traditional” Christmas start and what happened before then? Some of our traditions seem pretty tame compared with others from around the world – you really would not welcome a visit from The Grampus in Austria but you would probably enjoy seeing the Yule Lads from Iceland. Some traditional Christmas food may not be to everyone’s liking … would you try – Selyodka Pod Shuboy? “
