Bidston Lighthouse and Bidston Observatory trip

Thursday 18 April 2019

We have arranged a visit to these two adjacent historic buildings, on Thursday 18 April 2019. The Lighthouse (www.bidstonobservatory.org) is a Grade-II listed building. It was built in 1873 and served as Liverpool’s principal lighthouse until 1913. It then continued as an electric telegraph station until 1914. The Observatory, further along the ridge , (www.bidstonlighthouse.org.uk/visit) was built in 1866 and was the British Oceanographic Data Centre from 1975. From 1867 to 1969 the famous One O’clock Gun was fired from this building. We shall travel by coach from Chester to Bidston Hill above Birkenhead. The coach will pick up at:

  • 1000 St Mary’s Handbridge
  • 1010 Chester Railway Station

We shall visit first the old Observatory building and afterwards walk the short distance across to the Lighthouse building. Half the party will then visit the lighthouse itself while the other half has a sandwich lunch, with tea/coffee (all included in the cost). Only 26 members can be accommodated at the two locations so we shall reserve places in order of receipt of paid bookings. Cost £25 per person

If you wish to reserve places, please click here to download the form the and return this asap to:
